Department of pneumology

Prof. Dr. med. Christian Witt

About the department

The department of pneumology at MEOCLINIC Berlin provides counselling and treatment to patients with airways (bronchi) and lungs diseases. Doctors have various diagnostic tools and options to initiate a professional diagnosis and rapid treatment and therapy. The pneumatological examination is often possible without taking tissue samples to allow a reliable diagnosis still. A distinction is made between functional analysis and imaging processes. In the department, functional testing is carried out by the specialist using spirometry, and body plethysmography is also added. This is followed by blood gas analysis and CO diffusion measurement. After the examination, therapy is implemented in the ward. There are also supportive physiotherapy measures. These include tapping massages, inhalations or breathing training, thermotherapy, or physical training for necessary weight reduction. For some complaints, long-term oxygen therapy is also available.

The physicians at the department specialize in particular in obstructive lung diseases such as asthma or COPD. However, diseases of the pulmonary vessels and bronchial carcinoma are also treated. The team’s expertise lies in lung cancer diagnostics and treatment, lung transplants (second opinion), and urban air pollution (diesel exhaust fumes).
