Department of nephrology (kidney disease)

Dr. med. Markus Schmidt
nephrology, internal medicine

About the department

The department of nephrology (kidney disease) at Marien Hospital Marl offers a full range of services in diagnosing and treating kidney diseases and high blood pressure. The progression of the disease can be stopped or slowed down only if the cause of the disease is detected at an early stage, so the department provides a full range of preventive diagnostics. In the case of chronic kidney failure, doctors perform dialysis or a kidney transplant. Renal replacement therapy has been performed in the Department of Nephrology for over 35 years. At least 20,000 hemodialysis procedures are performed every year. The department has also been certified as a specialised clinic by the German Society of Nephrology since 2015.

The department provides medical care to patients with acute and chronic kidney disorders, arterial hypertension, and autoimmune diseases. In addition to conservative drug therapy, the department has modern equipment with all the possibilities of renal replacement therapy. If necessary, acute hemodialysis and hemofiltration are performed in an interdisciplinary intensive care unit, as well as hemoperfusion for extracorporeal treatment of poisoning.
