About the department

The department of internal medicine (gastroenterology, haematology, oncology, diabetology and metabolic diseases, palliative medicine) at Marien Hospital Marl deals with the diagnosis and treatment of various gastrointestinal, oncology, and endocrine system diseases. The department includes a gastroenterological unit, which specialises in inflammatory, infectious, and oncological diseases. Based on the department, there is a Stroke Centre, which complies with the recommendations of the German Society of Neurologists. Due to the variety state-of-art of equipment, a complete diagnosis is carried out within the first 2-3 hours after the patient arrives. After the diagnosis is made, the most modern therapeutic concepts are applied, including the dissolution of blood clots in the brain. In a palliative unit, doctors, nurses, therapists, pastors, psychologists and social workers accompany terminally ill people whose disease is advanced.

The range of the department extends to malignant diseases of the lungs, the gastrointestinal tract, lymph glands and bone marrow conditions. Both chemotherapy and antibody therapy is used. Specialists also eliminate pain in the joints and back on an outpatient and inpatient basis with intensive physiotherapy. In addition, the department has proficiency in palliative medicine.
