Department of diagnostic and interventional neuroradiology

Prof. Dr. med. Marius Hartmann
radiology, neuroradiology, interventional radiology

About the department

The department of diagnostic and interventional neuroradiology at Helios Hospital Berlin-Buch offers various treatments and therapy methods in radiology and interventional radiology with a focus on the nervous system. Neuroradiology deals with the diagnostics and therapy of diseases of the nervous system as a whole, the brain, the spinal cord, and the nerves, including their enveloping and neighbouring structures and blood vessels. The treatment of these diseases with minimally invasive techniques is referred to as interventional or endovascular neuroradiology. A particular focus is the treatment of diseases of the blood vessels supplying the brain after a stroke. The facility employs neuroradiologists who have mastered the complicated microcatheter techniques and work closely with stroke neurologists in a certified stroke unit. The department also has 25 years of experience in endovascular aneurysms (a pathological widening of an artery in the brain).

The diseases of the nervous system (brain and spinal cord) are treated, including vascular diseases. CT- and MRI-guided interventions are available for oncological and acute vascular conditions. Skilled experts perform endovascular interventions.

Treatment and diagnostic focus of the department

Diagnosis of nerve diseases (complete spectrum of diagnostic and interventional neuroradiology):

  • Computed tomography (CT)
  • CT-guided interventions
  • Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) with all functional-dynamic MR techniques
  • MR neurography
  • Pediatric Neuroradiology
  • Prenatal and fetal MRI diagnostics
  • Stereotactic MRI/CT
  • Interventional Neuroradiology

Therapy of cerebral vessels and spinal cord disease (including the treatment of vascular diseases):

  • Dilatation treatment of the carotid artery and arteries supplying the brain (balloon dilatation, stent treatment)
  • Closure of cerebral vasculature (aneurysms) with detachable platinum spirals (coiling) and flow-controlling stents (so-called flow diverter)
  • Reopening of cerebral vessels in acute stroke ( thrombectomy: mechanical clot dissolution )
  • Closure or reduction of vascular malformations (embolization) in the brain and head and neck region/ Endovascular aneurysm therapy
  • Closure or reduction of vascular malformations in the spinal cord and spinal canal
  • "Draining" (embolization) of vascular tumours in the head and neck region and skull base
  • CT-guided treatment of spinal pain syndromes caused by wear and tear
  • CT-guided tissue removal Diagnosis and treatment of narrowing of the tear ducts and salivary ducts
  • Pulse synchronous tinnitus treatment
