About the department

The department of obstetrics and perinatal medicine at Academic Hospital DRK Berlin-Westend provides a broad spectrum of maternity and child care. The department is certified by a Baby-Friendly Hospital Initiative. With the help of qualified specialists, more than 2,700 babies are born yearly. In addition, the department is equipped with modern techniques for mother and fetus prenatal check-ups. On the department's basis, the Parents' School is organised, where the couples are prepared physically and mentally for parenthood and attend postnatal exercises and breastfeeding courses. The medical service of the department is family-oriented. That's why doctors minimise separating newborns from their parents. For women's comfort, a group of midwives works in the department to help with the preparation for delivery and care for future newborns.

The primary focus is a birth of a healthy child with minimal risks for the mother and limited external interventions. Experienced doctors of the department follow women during all periods of childbirth: birth planning, pregnancy support, diagnostics of possible fetal congenital abnormalities, delivery and postpartum care. In addition, the doctors perform screening tests for the most common diseases in babies (including hearing tests). Furthermore, specialists provide management and control of mothers' chronic conditions during pregnancy and consult specialists from other fields in the case when surgery for a pregnant woman is needed.
