Department of internal medicine (gastroenterology, geriatrics)

Prof. Dr. med. Andreas Sturm
internal medicine, gastroenterology

About the department

The department of internal medicine (gastroenterology, geriatrics) at Academic Hospital DRK Berlin-Westend treats emergency cases all around the clock and provides professional medical care to patients with gastrointestinal tract diseases. Qualified and experienced department doctors perform endoscopic manipulations with modern high-resolution equipment and under sedation to ensure pain-free procedures. In addition, the gastroenterology department closely cooperates with the department of general, abdominal, endocrine and minimally invasive surgery. Both departments work under one roof in the intestinal centre and treat tumour diseases of the gastrointestinal tract. The German Cancer Society qualifies the intestinal centre as a colon and pancreatic cancer centre. It is worth mentioning that the head physician of the department is famous because of his scientific and clinical research regarding inflammatory bowel disease. The multidisciplinary team of the geriatrics department includes nurses, doctors, social workers, psychologists and physiotherapists from various fields. Furthermore, medical staff follow all international recommendations in caring for geriatric patients.

One of the clinical focuses of the department is a precise diagnosis of pathological changes in the gastrointestinal tract. Furthermore, the department provides treatment for malignant and benign tumours of the oesophagus, stomach, and small and large intestine. Bile ducts, liver diseases, and inflammatory bowel disease treatment are the other focal points of the department.
