internal medicine, palliative medicine

About the department

The department of palliative care at University Hospital of the Ludwig-Maximilians-University (LMU) Munich looks after patients whose medical and psychosocial situation requires more intensive support from a specialized team. The department, which consists of doctors, nurses, social workers, pastors, physiotherapists, respiratory therapists and psychologists, enables the improvement of the quality of life of a seriously ill person. The department has 10 beds in single rooms. Each patient room has its bathroom and access to the balcony. Suppose the patient wishes, relatives and friends can stay overnight in the palliative care ward. In regular team meetings, all professional groups involved have the opportunity to exchange views on the situation and needs of the patients and the appropriate treatment and counselling methods. Also, the department provides Specialized Outpatient Palliative Care (SAPV). The SAPV also makes it possible for people with advanced diseases to be accompanied in the home and familiar environment.

The department is focused on the palliative treatment of oncological conditions. The therapy combines symptomatic management, systemic chemotherapy, infusion therapy, pleural drainage, etc.
