About the hospital

University Hospital Augsburg has two locations in the city. As a provider of complex care, the hospital offers almost all medical specialities under one roof as a clinic with the highest level of service.

University Hospital Augsburg includes a total of 23 clinics and three institutes, as well as other medical areas and centres. More than 6,500 employees, including about 900 doctors and 2,500 nurses, take care of patients' health. The hospital has 1,541 inpatient and daycare beds. The clinic's doctors treat more than 65,000 inpatients and 175,000 outpatients every year. The hospital also has a pharmacy that meets all quality standards and provides hospital patients with everything they need.

The hospital has modern CT scanners, magnetic resonance tomography, ultrasound and endoscopic instruments. In addition to technical know-how, university dispensaries also offer direct access to medical innovation - patients benefit from advances in medicine and technology early. The hospital has a specialized pediatric pain centre where doctors offer multimodal pain therapy that includes all factors in treating chronic pain. The formation of interdisciplinary outpatient clinics enables a close exchange between attending physicians in diagnosing and developing a personalized treatment for the patient. Many patients avoid hospital stays thanks to the medical services offered by university outpatient clinics. University Hospital Augsburg is essential in supplying patients throughout the region with important blood products. In addition to its own needs, the hospital supplies many oncology centres and other clinics.

The hospital has an advanced emergency department where the medical team treats patients with severe injuries and acute pathological conditions around the clock. Departments such as allergology and dermatology, gynaecology, and otolaryngology work with the department of paediatrics to provide interdisciplinary care to patients of all ages. Specialized departments include vascular and endovascular surgery, pulmonology, rheumatology, oncology, nephrology, neurosurgery, nuclear medicine and radiology. Particular attention is paid to physiotherapy and occupational therapy, which support the patient in retraining, improving and maintaining mobility and functionality.

About the city

Augsburg is a thriving second largest city in Bavaria. Augsburg grew up on the site of a Roman military camp in the 15th century BC. The city owes its name to Emperor Augustus. Now the city houses the factories of world manufacturing giants (Siemens, M.A.N., NCR, the EADS aircraft manufacturing concern) and a lot of food and light industry enterprises. And this does not prevent Augsburg from remaining a charming old city with excellent tourist infrastructure. In 2000, the city was recognized by UNESCO as the greenest city in Europe and awarded for caring for the environment.

Augsburg offers a wide variety of museums. From the classic State Art Gallery in the Schenzler Palace, the Swabian Architectural or Roman Museum, to the more avant-garde Textil und Industriemuseum, the Puppet Theater and the Mask Museum. In the city, guests can admire dozens of magnificent fountains. The most famous of them is the triad along Maximilianstrasse: Augustus, Mercury and Hercules, erected in memory of the Roman past and symbolized the power of the free imperial city.

Augsburg gave the world very significant personalities in history - the richest Renaissance merchant Jakob Fugger and the German playwright Bertolt Brecht. In addition, the city was the birthplace of Leopold Mozart, the father of Wolfgang Amadeus and an influential composer. The Mozart Festival, held every May, is just one of the ways the city honours the memory of father and son composers. The University of Augsburg was founded in 1970 and has over 18,000 students every year. Augsburg University Hospital is the most important provider of medical services not only in the city but also in the surrounding districts.

Augsburg is a city that can entertain all tastes. After sightseeing, visiting museums and galleries, exploring the historical part of the city, and shopping, a better way to end the day is a traditional meal or a drink in one of the many great bars in the Old Town.
