About the department

The general, abdominal, and bariatric (weight loss) surgery department at St. Zdislavy Hospital Velke Mezirici provides a full spectrum of medical care in treating various diseases. Since 2004, the department has been dealing with the problem of treating obesity. In cooperation with specialists in obesity, internal medicine, surgery, psychology, diabetology and gastroenterology, the department offers patients a comprehensive treatment. The main task of the department is, first of all, the surgical treatment of obesity, especially in the form of the so-called "sleeve resection of the stomach" - or "gastrostomy tube", which, due to its high efficiency, is the most common form of surgical treatment of obesity in Europe. As a result, the department occupies one of the top places in the Czech Republic regarding the number of operations performed. Over the past 12 years, surgeons have performed over 2,000 bariatric surgeries.

In addition to treating obesity, the department performs many operations in abdominal, vascular and thyroid surgery. High-qualified surgeons have exceptional experience diagnosing and treating gallbladder diseases, various types of hernias, tumours, and pathological conditions of the stomach and intestines. Doctors usually use minimally invasive techniques with a surgical microscope, light sources, and other special tools. For patients, minimally invasive surgery has several advantages, such as a minor surgical wound, minimal damage to the abdominal wall, and less pain.
