Department of thoracic surgery

Prof. Dr. med. Waldemar Schreiner
thoracic surgery

About the department

The department of thoracic surgery at St. Elisabethen Hospital Frankfurt am Main specializes in treating patients with lung diseases requiring surgical treatment. The main focus of clinical activity is to treat benign and malignant tumours of the lungs and respiratory tract. Doctors pay special attention to diagnostics, so the department has new modern equipment. Treatment includes various therapies and their combinations, including chemotherapy, hormonal therapy and therapy with immunological drugs such as monoclonal antibodies. Pneumatological and thoracic surgical cases are discussed on an interdisciplinary basis at regular and frequent specialized conferences, where specialists from the department also attend.

One of the department's directions is the surgical treatment of injured patients with broken ribs. High-qualified specialists have more than ten years of experience in minimally invasive and tissue-sparing techniques that improve patients' postoperative quality of life. For patients, minimally invasive interventions have many advantages, such as less pain, reduced treatment and length of hospital stay, and excellent cosmetic outcomes.
