Department of geriatrics
The department of geriatrics at St. Elisabethen Hospital Frankfurt am Main provides care for elderly (over 70 years old) patients who often suffer from multiple diseases. Due to age-related physical changes, these patients are particularly at risk of needing care due to sudden illness. At the beginning of treatment, questionnaires and tests check self-help ability, mobility, mood, brain function and emotional well-being. In addition, the conditions of the social and living environment are fixed. A weekly senior team meeting, attended by staff from all involved departments, agrees on treatment goals for each patient for the post-discharge period. Since 2017, the department of geriatrics has been certified as a geriatric trauma centre in cooperation with the department of orthopaedics and traumatology.
The medical team often deals with chronic, long-term illnesses such as heart failure, the effects of a stroke, and major surgery. In addition to specially trained specialists and nurses, the geriatric team includes physiotherapists, occupational therapists, psychologists, social workers, pastors and speech therapists. Doctors in their practice use all the possibilities of the department, including physiotherapy, pain relief therapy and alternative therapies.
