About the department

The department of thoracic surgery at Academic Hospital Koblenz-Montabaur specialises in the surgical treatment of all chest diseases, especially the lungs. The expertise of the thoracic surgeons for minimally invasive methods, known as keyhole surgery, is well known internationally. The first minimally invasive removal of a lung lobe in Rhineland-Palatinate was carried out in the department. Thanks to the surgeons' qualifications, patients experience less pain, breathe better and recover more quickly from the procedure. The medical team also develops new strategies, such as video mediastinoscopic lymphadenectomy (VAMLA) and mediastinoscopic sonography (MUS). Specialists from Germany and Europe, and Japan want to learn these newly developed methods and come to the department to train this operation.

The department treats benign and malignant diseases of the lungs, chest, pleura and mediastinum. In addition, inflammatory conditions such as pleurisy and lung abscess, pulmonary hyperinflation (emphysema) and pneumothorax (collapsed lung) are treated. Surgical services cover specialised diagnostic techniques, minimally invasive surgery, and significant complex surgeries. According to the latest scientific findings, the combination of new techniques with minimally invasive surgery protects the patient and improves the chances of recovery.
