Rostock is a major port city known for being home to one of the oldest universities in the world. The name of the town is of Slavic origin. During its eight centuries, Rostock has always been the state's largest and most potent municipality.

Rostock is the only member of the German Historic Landmarks located on the coast. The salty air of the Baltic Sea belongs to the city as much as the singing of seagulls.
