About the department

The psychiatry, psychosomatics and psychotherapy department at University Hospital Wurzburg (UKW) covers the entire spectrum of diagnosing and therapeutical options for mental illnesses. The treatment of mental illness in Würzburg has a long tradition. For about 450 years, people have been treated inpatients, for 150 years, a new generation of psychiatrists has been trained, and for 100 years, intensive research has been carried out. Every year, about 3,000 people with mental illness or mental disorders receive support and treatment in seven specialized departments, three-day hospitals and eight special polyclinics. In addition to competent diagnostics, professional consultations and therapeutic assistance at the level of recognized methodological recommendations, personal care for people in their needs comes to the fore. Highly qualified staff with more than 100 therapists from the medical, psychological, therapeutic, and socio-pedagogical fields and a motivated and specialized medical team make it possible to develop an individually tailored therapy concept at the highest level.

The range of services includes modern treatment of all clinical manifestations of psychiatry based on national and international standards. Psychologists specialize in treating bipolar disorders, depression, anxiety disorders and stress. The spectrum of therapy extends from numerous treatments, psychotherapy, pharmacotherapy and stimulation methods to complementary offerings such as occupational therapy, physiotherapy or music-art therapy. With this wealth of knowledge and experience, the department creates the foundation on which recovery and prevention of mental illness are possible.
