Department of thoracic surgery

Prof. Dr. med. Rudolf Hatz
thoracic surgery

About the department

The department of thoracic surgery at University Hospital of the Ludwig-Maximilians-University (LMU) Munich offers the entire spectrum of modern diagnostic and treatment procedures for thoracic diseases. Special attention is paid to oncological diseases of the lungs, mediastinum, and pleura. The department has at its disposal the most modern operational centre in Europe. This allows for highly specialized interventions, such as minimally invasive surgery for tumour diseases or lung transplantation. The department includes its own endoscopic centre, where all the necessary diagnostic tests and therapeutic interventions are carried out. Based on the centre bronchoscopy, endobronchial ultrasound and ultrasound-guided biopsy for histological examination are performed. Excellently trained staff and state-of-the-art equipment guarantee diagnostics and treatment according to the latest international protocols. The department can perform extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) for patients with severe disease, which reduces the risk of complications and ensures a safe waiting for a lung transplant operation. The thoracic surgery department is a part of the Munich Lung Transplantation Group (MLTG).

One of the department's directions is the treatment of diseases leading to stenosis of the upper respiratory tract and bronchi. In addition to obstructive stenosis, the department deals with rib fractures, thymus diseases, malignant tumours of the lungs and pleura.
