Department of metabolic and bariatric (weight loss) surgery

Dr. Murat Ustun
general surgery, bariatric surgery

About the department

The department of metabolic and bariatric (weight loss) surgery at Istanbul Bariatric Center provides a wide range of surgical procedures for obese patients, including post-bariatric plastic and reconstructive surgery. The surgeons were among the first to apply advanced bariatric surgery techniques in the country, such as laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy and gastric bypass. The department is a leader in its field due to the experience of the medical team and the low complication rate. Modern endoscopic techniques, body mass index measurements, and laboratory diagnostics of lipid and blood sugar levels are used for diagnosis. Treatment is administered on an interdisciplinary basis in collaboration with gastroenterologists, nutritionists, surgeons, psychologists and physiotherapists. The main goal of the medical team is to improve the patient's appearance and avoid developing diseases associated with obesity.

Specialists resort to surgical treatment only if diet, drugs, exercise, and behavioural therapy are ineffective. For the surgical treatment, doctors spare minimally invasive techniques, including laparoscopic methods, single-site surgery, robotic surgery and endoscopic procedures. In addition, surgeons offer post-bariatric aesthetic surgery, which is performed to correct sagging skin. Abdominoplasty is achieved not only for obese patients but also for women after pregnancy, after open surgeries and injuries, and for patients with loose, sagging skin.
