About Freiburg

Freiburg, located on the southern edge of the German Black Forest, is a university town famous for its medieval centre. Its cobbled squares are lined with late Baroque, Renaissance and Gothic buildings, carefully remodelled after World War II. Freiburg is one of the eco-friendly cities in Europe, thanks to its many lush parks and surrounding highlands. Today, the German city is aiming for carbon neutrality by 2050.

Münsterplatz is the largest square in the city centre. Weekly markets are held here almost every day. Its main attractions include the Historic Merchant's Hall, its dark red façade and colourful towers, and the "Haus Zum Schonen Eck", now the City Historical Museum. Freiburg-Münster, with its high elevation and Gothic architecture, is also the city's most distinctive landmark. Freiburg's many magnificent squares provide the perfect backdrop for the dozens of celebrations and festivals held annually in the Old Town. In addition, the city has numerous parks and green spaces on one of the nearby lakes or the 1284-meter Schauinsland near Freiburg. It is not surprising that Freiburg has been named a green city, as it is considered a global pioneer in sustainability.

With 400 km of cycle paths and twice as many bicycles as cars, Freiburg is a cyclist's paradise. When much of Germany was building-wide motorways and extensive car parks, Freiburg launched its first urban transport policy in 1969, focusing on environmentally friendly modes of transport. In 2008, the city of Freiburg grandly adopted the "Green City" title. The city is a centre of academia and research, where numerous intellectuals and Nobel Prize winners have lived, worked and taught. Freiburg has one of the oldest and most famous German universities, the Albert Ludwig University, as well as its medical centre. University Hospital Freiburg provides medical services to almost a million patients a year.

Freiburg offers almost endless possibilities for a relaxing city trip and a healthy balance in your daily routine. Lively centre and quiet green oases, tradition and modernity, history and fashion - everything is nearby and easily accessible.
