Department of renal replacement therapy and transfusion

Prof. Dr. med. Christoph Wanner
nephrology, internal medicine

About the department

The department of renal replacement therapy and transfusion specializes in managing emergencies in patients requiring blood transfusion or replacement therapy. The medical team offers all forms of renal replacement therapy and performs about 6,000 dialysis treatments annually. The department has its hemodialysis unit with 15 beds for inpatients or day patients and provides substitution therapy for all patients with acute conditions. The department's tasks include preparing for dialysis by placing a shunt, atrial catheter, or peritoneal dialysis catheter. Renal replacement therapy is carried out in acute and chronic renal failure, poisoning and drug overdose, and severe violations of the electrolyte composition of the blood. Comprehensive medical care and high professional competence allow all victims to enjoy a high quality of life.

The department is also responsible for the optimal supply of patients with blood and blood products. It includes collecting classic blood supplies, and many special preparations often made individually for individual patients. The department's laboratories use state-of-the-art techniques to ensure that patients tolerate the appropriate blood products well and that transfusions can develop their optimal effect. In addition, therapeutic apheresis procedures, which can remove harmful components from the blood of patients with certain diseases, are a key focus of the department.
