Department of oncology

The oncology department at University Hospital Wurzburg is dedicated to the thorough diagnosis and effective treatment of benign and malignant tumours. The department has 113 beds for patients requiring inpatient treatment. Before starting therapeutic procedures, patients undergo complex diagnostic measures, including a physical examination, ultrasound and radiological methods, and most importantly, a biopsy followed by histopathological examination. Once the diagnosis is made, the medical team will determine the course of therapy on an interdisciplinary basis. In close collaboration with other hospital departments such as surgery, radiotherapy, radiology, nuclear medicine and pathology, treatments are discussed and planned according to the latest scientific knowledge. As a result, the medical team provides an optimal and stage-appropriate treatment best suited to each clinical picture.

The oncologists of the department have exceptional experience in treating tumours of the gastrointestinal tract, biliary system, kidneys and bladder, as well as soft tissues and bones. The department applies the most innovative treatment regimens recognized by the international oncological communities. For example, doctors have successfully used hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy (HIPEC) surgery, which allows the destruction of tumour cells without damaging surrounding tissues. Particular attention is paid to immunological methods of cancer treatment, which are currently the most effective and efficient. The department also employs psycho-oncologists who are always ready to help cancer patients and their relatives.
