Department of conservative dentistry and periodontology

Prof. Dr. med. dent. Gabriel Krastl

About the department

The conservative dentistry and periodontology department at University Hospital Wurzburg specializes in maintaining the teeth and gums of patients, whether due to deep caries, progressive bone loss or dental trauma. About 4,000 outpatients of all ages are treated in the department annually. Dentists have extensive experience in dealing with children and do everything they can to prevent children from fearing going to the doctor in the future. By applying modern therapy concepts, doctors can often save teeth that were previously considered unviable, which is especially important for children and youth. Furthermore, doctors pay special attention to the prevention of diseases. To avoid developing dental diseases, doctors carry out tartar removal, professional cleaning, and fluoride varnish.

The department's range of services includes the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of diseases of the hard substance of the tooth, dental pulp and periodontal disease. The main goal of the medical team is to preserve the shape and function of natural teeth for as long as possible. Dentists try to restore the tooth with therapeutic measures such as fillings, inlays, or partial crowns if the tooth is already damaged. To imperceptibly repair teeth defects, doctors use composites or ceramic materials. The department closely cooperates with maxillofacial and facial plastic surgery and orthodontics, so all medical manipulations are complex.
