Department of child and adolescent psychiatry, psychosomatics and psychotherapy

The child and adolescent psychiatry, psychosomatics and psychotherapy department at University Hospital Wurzburg is the largest treatment centre in Lower Franconia in the field of psychiatry and psychosomatics. The department covers the entire spectrum of mental disorders in children and adolescents aged 3 to 18. The department offers 61 inpatient beds, including two open psychotherapy units and an intensive care unit. The medical team consults and treats about 3,500 patients a year. For more than 40 years, the medical team has been paying attention to research activities to discover how and by what means mental illness occurs in children and adolescents and how they can be recognized, cured or even prevented.

The individual therapeutic approaches of the department are aimed at restoring social inclusion and participation of trusted children so that they can again go about their daily lives with their families, at school and with their friends. Treatment takes place with an interdisciplinary team of doctors, psychologists, social educators, nursing services and many other specialists. Department specialists develop an individual treatment concept consisting of behavioural therapy, family therapy, occupational therapy and pharmacotherapy.
