About the department

The department of cardiac surgery at University Hospital of the Ludwig-Maximilians-University (LMU) Munich carries out a full range of diagnostics and treatments for various heart diseases that require surgical intervention. The department employs more than 30 well-qualified doctors who find an individual approach to each patient and carry out the treatment following the latest guidelines and protocols of modern medicine. Nursing staff also take care of patients during treatment and in the postoperative period. More than 2,500 operations are performed per year. Modern technologies and new equipment allow the application of low-traumatic minimally invasive surgical treatment methodsThe first heart surgery was performed in 1981. In addition, a combination of heart-lung transplants, lung transplants, and heart-lung-liver transplants are regularly performed in the department, a referral centre for organ transplants. Also, on the basis of the department, research is being carried out in tissue engineering, which will make it possible to prevent the development of cardiological diseases and avoid complications.

The main task of the department is the treatment of congenital and acquired heart defects, heart transplantation, bypass surgery, cardiac valve repair and replacement, operations on the aorta and other vessels.
