Prof. Dr. med. Kai-Uwe Eckardt
internal medicine, nephrology

About the department

The department of internal medicine (nephrology) at the University Hospital Charite Berlin provides qualified treatment of all stages of kidney diseases and internal intensive care. The team is known for its interdisciplinary approach, which is aimed at cooperation with other clinics. The department has the newest and certified medical equipment at its disposal. It is essential to say that the specialists stay connected with the patients even after operations with the help of a telemedical care platform. In addition, clinical studies are performed on the department's basis, and recent scientific findings are implemented in daily routine. It is worth mentioning that the research in the area of dialysis and transplantation is carried out in the department. Furthermore, the nephrology team cooperates with the cardiac surgery and oncology clinic to perform research projects.

The focus includes diagnosis and treatment of kidney diseases, particularly kidney transplantation at the last stages. Moreover, experienced doctors in the department provide intensive care for severe conditions caused by kidney failure (lung failure, cardiac arrest, etc.). In addition, the Center for Rare Kidney Diseases on the department's basis helps patients.
