Department of thoracic surgery

Dr. med. Hamidreza Mahoozi
general surgery, thoracic surgery

About the department

The department of thoracic surgery at Regio Hospital Elmshorn diagnoses and treats all benign and malignant diseases of the lungs (lung cancer), the mediastinum, the central airways and the chest wall. All patients with cancer are discussed in an interdisciplinary tumour conference by experts in thoracic surgery, pneumology, oncology, radiology and pathology, and recommendations are made individually tailored to them based on the most current and up-to-date international findings, evidence and standards. Department's experienced doctors specialise in minimally invasive operations such as uniportal video-assisted thoracoscopy (U-VATS), which enables complex operations on the lungs and is particularly gentle on patients. Also, the department is one of the few centres in Germany that can offer this delicate type of thymus gland removal (subxiphoid VATS thymectomy).

The department focuses on the most modern, minimally invasive methods, such as so-called "keyhole surgery", for examining the chest, airways and mediastinum in the treatment of advanced tumours. Compared to open surgery, more minor, less noticeable scars remain. In addition to the cosmetic aspect, the patients recover more quickly than open surgery, feel significantly less pain and can be discharged home sooner.
