About the department

The department of pediatric and adolescent psychiatry, psychotherapy, and psychosomatics at Regio Hospital Elmshorn treats children up to 18 with mental stress, acute or longer-lasting mental or psychosomatic disorders and diseases. The cooperation of the educational, psychotherapeutic and medical professionals in the department is based on a typical humanistic attitude and pursues a psychodynamic and systemic approach, taking into account a trauma-sensitive perspective. All medical staff have a basic knowledge of attachment-related work, recognise patients' needs, and meet them with care. The team's most important task is to support young people to regulate solid feelings and calm them down.

The department's goal is to support children and their families in mental distress, recognise and understand their difficulties, and enable healthy, age-appropriate development. Supporting families is primarily about empowering the whole family to implement change for all involved. Anyone who experiences or sees mental stress or related disorders in themselves or others can turn to the department: the children or young people themselves, their parents, caregivers, relatives, acquaintances, and professional helpers.
