general surgery, abdominal surgery

About the department

The department of general and abdominal surgery at Academic Hospital Neuwerk Monchengladbach performs diagnostics and surgical treatment of abdominal organs and general surgical interventions. The department is certified as a Competence Center for Bariatric Surgery, a Competence Center for Minimally Invasive Surgery, and a specialised Center for Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease. Doctors of the department are guided by the patient and treat with the help of the latest surgical technologies, taking into account current recommendations. In addition to general surgery, the department offers the full range of visceral oncological surgery. Furthermore, an interdisciplinary team develops a concept of therapy and aftercare tailored to the individual patient.

The main focus is on treating diseases of the abdominal cavity, emphasising cancer and minimally invasive surgery. The range of services also includes pediatric surgery, such as operations for appendicitis, hernia, and soft tissue diseases. Many of the department's surgical interventions can be performed in outpatient. Also, surgery for obstructive defecation syndrome and associated pelvic floor disease is becoming increasingly important. For these diagnoses, the clinic uses the most modern surgical techniques, such as stapling hemorrhoidopexy, according to Longo, the so-called STARR.
